Sassy's Birthday

Today is Sassy's birthday! She got a catnip mouse as her present and enjoyed a few moments of crazy kitten-like behaviour before realising she's now a responsible mother!

Normally the cats are fed on dry food with the occasional tin of wet food as a treat and on their birthdays, when each of them benefits :-) but as Sassy has been getting lots of extra feeding including wet food and prawns during her pregnancy, today it will only be the rest of the Gang who will get the wet food treat! She'll carry on as normal....

The kittens are doing well with all of them now either weighing over 100gm or nudging that marker. I've been topping up the two little choccies with Lactol formula, and they're catching up with their siblings. Sassy's a great mother - she never lets them get far from her, even in their heated bed; if one of them crawls to the other end of the basket she sits up and drags them back. A couple have actually rolled out of the bed and she's been on to them in an instant, picking them up and bringing them back into the nest.

I love the little squeaks and grumbly sounds that they make and it's so funny to watch when two - or more - want to fasten on to the same teat! They can be very persistent in getting their own way. At the moment their eyes are still closed but it's so very easy to see how their eyes can get scratched or damaged when they are fighting for that prime spot. Even the teenies are now more prepared to muscle their way in, which is a good thing.

I've taken some more photos and hopefully they'll get posted up on the kitten page over the next couple of days. As my good friend Philip is developing and managing the site for me, I have to rely on him being able to spend the time on it. But he's doing a great job - thanks Philip; also to Julie who has put up with him spending so much time on the site as it's been set up!

More blogging moments soon..... if you're reading the blog and enjoying it (which obviously I hope you are!) please feel free to post a comment! Or if you want to contact me directly, go to my contact page and drop me an email.

Whoops! Human error happens when you least expect it – we've celebrated Sassy's birthday five days early! But she didn't object and I won't tell her if you don't  :-)

Kittens arrive - good and sad news

Well the kittens were born in the early hours of Tuesday 29 July. I think the thunderstorm set Sassy off! The first - a breech birth - arrived at 0105 and the last at 0245. She had seven in total - it looks like 5 chocolates and 2 browns. So far I haven't checked their gender - I'm too exhausted after a couple of nights sleeping on the sofa in preparation for the birth! None of the kittens are particularly large but the first one was quite small.

This morning they were all alive and kicking and attempting to suckle, but sadly, after taking a shower and pottering about in the kitchen for a short while I went back into the lounge and Sassy was quite agitated, miaowing and fidgeting about. I picked her up for a cuddle and there was the teeniest of the kittens underneath her. Either it hadn't had the strength to wriggle out when she sat on it, or she knew something was wrong and suffocated it. Attempts to resuscitate weren't successful. Although very sad, nature sometimes takes over and it's better that it happens now rather than when it was a few days or even weeks old.

Well I'll keep updating as things go on - fingers crossed that I don't have any more sad news to report and that the remaining 6 kittens go from strength to strength!
